This is about the death of a flower. A few years ago I attended a poetry reading at Miami-Dade College in Miami, Florida, where a Cuban poet by the name of Mariaelena Cruz Varela read some poems out of one of her most recent books. In one of her personal statements she said, "Please pray for Cuba, because in Cuba there are no more flowers." I perceived this to mean that in Cuba people were so controlled and manipulated that no one had the ability to express themselves as they wished in a carefree manner. That there was in essence a sense of death within the living -- a resignation of sorts that there was nothing left to fight for in their lives. She, herself had been imprisoned for writing a letter to a certain individual that stated that the Cuban regime was no longer working for the people and that it was time for a change. She was battered and forced to eat the very letter that she wrote -- literally. The fallen flower in this painting represents all of the people who have had to pay the ultimate price, while seeking freedom of expression, as others around them could only watch in sorrow because of their own fears of getting involved and facing the same plight.
