The Muse / La Musa

This painting represents a sweet fifteen's celebration that is practiced in most Latin cultures. It symbolizes when a young girl enters womanhood, a pivotal point in a young woman's life for our culture. It represents a sense of transition where the young girl is left behind and the woman emerges to begin her new journey. As well as representing a part of our culture, La Musa is also fashioned after one of Havana's last carnivals reigning beauty queens. Her name is Edesa Eijo, but is also affectionately known as "La Musa". This is also in homage to her and what she represented to our culture in her early youth. In this painting she had also become my muse for its inspiration. Note that her choker is inscribed with the number "5" which was her number at the Havana Carnival.
