Artist inspiration:
This painting is actually a self-portrait. It shows me as a child and as the child in me that I still possess. In the past, I survived my mother’s countless absences, while she was hospitalized with mental illness, by clinging on to my pets. It shows that my pets became the only family figures that I could relate to at the time. It also shows how the family ties are broken due to mental illness and a family that could not bond together during hard times. This is represented by the broken rope that I am jumping. It also shows the sexual issues that were inlaid at a very early age due to a blurred vision of religious and sexual beliefs tied in with a lot of insanity.
