Artist Inspiration:
This original painting has a dual title: Orginally, “Libertad o Muerte?” and subsequently, “Looking Out from Within”. It was first the centerpiece of an exhibition at The Tower Theatre in Miami, Florida, on May 13, 2005. Just prior to the vernissage, it was part of a performance or “happening” where George Rodez and fellow artist Ana Maria Sarlat were mourning the death of Liberty on the island of Cuba. Rodez represented the death of Liberty, while Ana Maria Sarlat represented the island of Cuba mourning the death of Liberty. The performance included a mourning procession through Miami’s Little Havana neighborhood. Months later, it was re-titled as “Looking Out from Within” and became the centerpiece to the Dream Series itenerary of exhibits in Europe and the face of the catalogs published for the exhibits. The painting was first exhibited internationally at the Pagés Espai d’ Art Gallery in Barcelona, Spain in 2005.
