Artwork Description

Artist Inspiration:

This original painting bears a dual title: initially “Libertad o Muerte?” and later “Looking Out from Within.” It first took center stage at an exhibition at The Tower Theatre in Miami, Florida, on May 13, 2005. Just before its official unveiling, the artwork became part of a live performance—a poignant happening—where George Rodez and fellow artist Ana Maria Sarlat enacted a symbolic mourning for the death of Liberty in Cuba. Rodez embodied Liberty itself, while Sarlat portrayed the island in mourning. The performance culminated in a solemn procession through Miami’s Little Havana.

Months later, the painting was re-titled “Looking Out from Within” and became the focal piece of the Dream Series exhibitions in Europe. It was prominently featured as the face of the published exhibition catalogs and made its international debut at Pagés Espai d’Art Gallery in Barcelona, Spain, in 2005.
