Artist inspiration:
“The Bystander” tends to be emotionally detached from the family, taking a longer view. They simply expect less from the family for themselves. There are three violations to this role. One of these, which inspired this painting, is that some bystanders try to be invisible within the family so that they don’t trigger an ill relative’s symptoms or attract anyone else’s irritable attention. To bystanders, there is something about not being noticed within the family that’s very helpful. They can escape by going outwards to others or inwards to their own imagination.
