Artwork Description

Artist inspiration:
This is a sacred place for me. The terrace is the place I spent most of my time in while at my grandparent’s house in Cuba. I have very fond memories of the time I spent in this space. I particularly remember my grandfather feeding me while I looked out into the terrace. In Grandfather’s Terrace, I am standing in the kitchen and on the other side of the terrace is the living room and the main dining room, and on the left are the bedrooms. The parrot you see would squawk when I would go into the kitchen late at night for a snack. And in the doorway across from the terrace, you can see the shadow of a fully grown dog, which was a puppy at the time. Although I was there only between the ages of 2 and 4, this painting was done 36 years later entirely from memory. I had always wondered how accurate it was. But recently, I was provided with photos which revealed that my memories had served me well. On the flip side, this piece also represents the days and nights (the double blue backgrounds), where nothing changes. In Cuba, one has no privacy even in your own home. Big brother, represented here by the eye, is always watching over you and knows everything you do; neighbors that rat on you if you are doing anything that is considered counter revolutionary.
