Artwork Description

Artist inspiration:
This painting was inspired by going to a local Miami restaurant called “Casa Panza” or “Fat Belly House”. It is a Spanish style restaurant with Flamenco dancers and musicians. One dancer in particular was my subject for this painting. Her name was Ochoa. She would squint her eyes whenever the spotlight would shine on her but staring right into it as though daring the light. Very dramatic. It also represents the distortion of bodies in their sometimes-violent dance moves. The rosary represents a moment in at least one performance in the evening when they would stop everything, light candles, and pay homage to “La Virgen Del Rosio” or “Virgin of Dew” by singing and waving the candles back and forth. This was constantly done to bless the restaurant and for its prosperity. All and all, the experience in this restaurant was always a delightful one. An unexpected pleasure with an element of surprise.
