Artwork Description

Artist inspiration:
This room represents an experience that my mother had as a child. She claims that when her mother died, her aunt and grandmother told her that her mother’s spirit would not leave her alone. So, they proceeded to exorcize my mother by tying her to her bed, cutting a chicken’s head off and running the blood-dripping chicken’s body up and down her little body. This dead chicken was supposed to pick up the dead spirits from my mother and set her free. Needless to say, that it created a trauma in my mother’s life that she has never quite gotten over. She still remembers to this day. If you look closely at the painting, you will notice the blood and the body of the chicken on the bed along with a big bow she used to wear on her hair at the time. The head of the chicken is on the night table by a glass of water that was placed there for spiritual clarity. It is a strange and bazaar way of helping a child who has just lost her mother at the age of three; to move forward and try to get her to forget that her mother ever existed. All this because she would cry and ask for her mother, something any child would do if it felt the absence of its mother.
